Held at Masterton Primary School, Masterton Intermediate, Lakeview School, South End School Carterton and Featherston School.

Masterton Safe and Healthy Community Council is offering 
A FREE programme for children aged 5 to 13 years.

Week 1: Monday 16^th January to Thursday 19^th

Week 2: Tuesday 24^th to Friday 27^th.    

Thursday 19^th and Friday 27^th limited to 10-13 year olds only. Carterton and Featherston limited ot 10-13 year olds for entire programme.

10.00am to 3.00pm daily

Programme

10.00-12.30pm -  a variety of sports will be played in teams, including Rippa Rugby, Cricket, Soccer, Netball and Swimming.

Lunch from 12.30-1.00pm provided by MSHCC.

1.00-3.00pm 5 to 9 years old swimming if the venue has a pool, games and science based activities if there is no pool.

1.00–3.00pm 10-13 years olds, Week 1 Design and build a trolley, culminating in a bus trip to Henley Lake on Thursday for a trolley derby with the other children participating in the school holiday programme.

1.00-3.00pm 10-13 year olds, Week 2 Design and build a raft and on Friday join the other children from our programmes at Henley Lake for raft races.

Brother Number One

Masterton Safe and Healthy Community Council brings Rob Hamill to Masterton.

Rob will be speaking about his trip to Cambodia where he retraced the events that saw his brother Kerry caught, tortured and murdered by the Khmer Rouge in 1978

Through Rob Hamill’s personal story, the powerful documentary ‘Brother Number One’ explores one of the “forgotten” genocides of the 20th century, examining how and why nearly 2 million Cambodians could be killed by a fanatical regime known as the Khmer Rouge.  Rob spoke to eyewitnesses, perpetrators and survivors.

The film will screen following Rob’s story.

Ageing with Attitude was supported by Masterton District Council and local community organisations along with a number of businesses.


Feedback after the event has been very positive and a committment to repeat the event next year has been made.

Facilitators Required for Strengthening Families

Strengthening Families is seeking expressions of interest from suitable applicants to train as Facilitators for Family/Whanau meetings. This is a voluntary role.

Strengthening Families is a structured, early intervention, family/whanau-centred process that seeks to achieve the following long-term outcome:

Children, young people and their families/whanau have the opportunity to reach their full potential and participate positively in society.

The role of the Facilitator is to:

Establish the ground rules for each meeting, including confidentiality, respect and safety

Establish an agenda for the meeting

Provide structure and leadership in the meeting process

Ensure that cultural and gender needs are responded to appropriately

Ensure that participants are clear about their role in the meeting

Bring an independent and unbiased point of view

Ensure that the SF process is adhered to

Ensure outcomes or resolutions are recorded.

The skills we are seeking include:

Good listener

Culturally sensitive

Good leadership and ability to keep participants focused on the issues

Commitment to the principles of Te-Tiriti oWaitangi

Non-judgemental

Willingness to learn new skills

The training will be over two consecutive days 9.00-3.00pm on Thursday October 20th and Friday October 21st. 

Facilitators once trained, will be asked to commit to a minimum number of meetings per year.

Climate Change Talk, Masterton Town Hall August 4th

"Maintaining farm productivity and profits in an uncertain climate."
Seminar led by three leading New Zealand specialists: Dr Jim Salinger, Auckland Climate Scientist, Professor Caroline Saunders, Lincoln University and Rod Oram, Business Journalist.
They will explain the nature of climate change, its impacts on New Zealanders’ health, properties, infrastructure, environment and rural industries. They will bring the latest information on climate change science and how it affects rural industries in your area.
Dr Jim Salinger will speak on the latest information on climate change science and its impacts on farming and communities in the New Zealand and local context.
Professor Caroline Saunders will speak on what all this means for agricultural trade, greenhouse gas emissions and what practical and cost-effective steps farmers can take in reducing their emissions whilst improving their economic viability and business opportunities in a changing world.
Rod Oram will talk on emissions trading and compare New Zealand's climate change targets with our trading partners' targets, and what this means for agricultural trade.

About the speakers:
Dr Salinger is an Auckland-based internationally renowned climate change scientist, now at the University of Auckland and the University of Tasmania, who formerly worked at NIWA. He was a lead author for the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change which was awarded a Nobel Peace Prize in 2007.
Professor Caroline Saunders of Lincoln University has 20 years research expertise in the UK and New Zealand. Her current research includes evaluating trade and the environment including assessment of international markets policies and their impact on agricultural development.
Rod Oram is an award winning financial and business journalist and Radio New Zealand National/Sunday Star Times commentator. He has commentated widely on the Emissions Trading Scheme, climate change and the various pressures being placed on trade for now and during the 21st century.

Sustainable Living Education Trust Programme

MSHCC is hosting Masterton's Sustainable Living Education Trust programmes.

The series will run for 8 weeks commencing Tuesday 9 August at 7.00pm. Each session runs for 2 hours and the course finishes on 27 September. The venue for the programme is Reap House, 340 Queen Street, Masterton. To register email Steven Slothouwer <steven.slothouwer@yahoo.co.nz> or phone MSHCC 3788900.

The course is FREE but we do ask learners to make a koha towards photocopying and resourcing. Steven is so passionate about sustainability and sharing his knowledge he is kindly facilitating the programme at no charge. We thank Steven for his contribution.

What is involved in a Sustainable Living Programme -
The eight Sustainable Living study topics have been designed to work if necessary as self-contained content and to support the learner to implement change which directly saves resources and money.  A typical course covers most of these topics on consecutive weeks: 

• energy efficiency
• eco-building design and insulation
• water use and protection
• gardening with nature
• organic veges
• waste reduction, including composting
• shopping with the planet in mind
• travel options and carbon impacts
• community resilience (new in mid 2010)

The course makes use of facilitated discussion, fun group activities, film clips and slide talks; some sessions may have visiting guest experts or council staff. They provide informative printed handouts (which can be emailed if preferred) and suggest activities to try at home between sessions. Website information sources and calculators are used in support, for example to work out your household carbon footprint at www.carbonzero.co.nz  

Here is an independent source of information, with good ideas on what you can do in NZ to save on globally-valuable resources such as vehicle fuel and fresh 

water, seek a healthier lifestyle and perhaps trim some living expenses.
Cut your travel and heating cost by some re-design of your lifestyle. Grow healthy food at home and buy NZ-grown food with less wasteful packaging in the shops. You can become rather more sustainable without it 'costing the earth'. Sustainable Living Education Trust helps you find how.
Practical guides to taking household and community action are available free from the Sustainable Living website. The background reasons on why it's good for you to be taking action now, are explored in publications available free on the issues pageand alternatively as part of our quiz.

Free Graffiti Removal Kits for Private Residences

Masterton Safe and Healthy Community Council with the support of Masterton District Council and a generous grant from Eastern and Central Community Trust are pleased to be able to offer the residents of Masterton free graffiti removal kits.

The kits contained in a bucket include a bottle of graffiti remover, cleaning cloth, paintbrush, voucher from Resene for a free paintpot or a voucher for a reduction in the price of a larger can of paint, chemical information data sheet, and gloves. If the graffiti is not paint based then the graffiti remover is replaced with a bottle of terpentine.

Kits can be uplifted from MSHCC, Reap House, 340 Queen Street, Masterton or the Masterton District Council Offices.

We ask you to complete a disclaimer form in return for the kit and to supply us with information about the graffiti to enable us to gather data on the volume of graffiti and the amount removed by the kit user. This will assist MSHCC to seek further funding from philanthropic organisations to continue the supply of kits.

Greater Wellington Regional Council is undertaking a review of public transport services (buses and trains) in Wairarapa. Wairarapa based consultant Brian Baxter has been engaged to conduct the review.

This is your opportunity to hear Brian explain the review process, answer any questions you may have regarding the review or current services and complete a submission at the conclusion of the meeting. Staff from Masterton Safe and Healthy Community Council and District Councillors will be on-hand to assist with the completion of submissions if required.

What is the purpose of Masterton Safe and Healthy Community Council you might well ask?

Well to answer your question we provide the following summary - In brief, we are a crime prevention, community and youth development service covering the Wairarapa. Our services include Strengthening Families, Youth Conex, Masterton Neighbourhood Support and Community Development.

In full -

The purpose of the Masterton Safe and Healthy Community Council is to co-ordinate community based activities that make our community a safer place.

The Council also supports projects that involve community and agency co-operation in environmental and other projects that will lead to greater individual and community wellbeing.

Functions of Masterton Safe and Healthy Community Council:

To…

•         Provide leadership in the task of planning for a Safe and Healthy community;

•         Gain the co-operation of groups/organisations in the community and motivate them to take part in a planned approach to crime prevention;

•         Co-ordinate the effects of central and local Government agencies and community groups working to enhance community safety and wellbeing under the principles of ‘Agenda 21’;

•         Co-ordinate the activities of Strengthening Families, Youth Action Programme, Neighbourhood Support; in a manner that makes best use of resources;

•         Initiate and support activities that are consistent with best community development practice that enhance the wellbeing of the Masterton District community;

•         Foster local initiatives for the enhancement of community safety and security;

•         Evaluate programmes and projects in the community that contribute to community safety, security and well being;

•         Raise awareness of the steps which individuals and groups can take to enhance individual and community safety and security;

•         Co-ordinate local events for national and international days that impact on community wellbeing.
